This 10 minutes piece features a tuning system I devised 10 years ago and called "Old Fashioned 1" probably because it reminded me of some ancient sounding scale.
Ratios from C are 1/1, 19/18, 9/8, 6/5, 5/4, 4/3, 7/5, 3/2, 8/5, 5/3, 16/9, 15/8.
For this piece I mostly use the white keys of an Halberstadt keyboard (a Kurzweil digital piano, in my case) except for the third of the four sections of it.
I used a technique I had never tried before: slowing down the MIDI performance I had previously recorded. Often sequencers are used for tricks like speeding up musical passages we are not able to play at the right speed. I have done it many times! But slowing down something that was already slow in the beginning gives an otherworldly pace to it. Something I would not be able to do in real time either.
The video part was recorded early in the morning, in my garden, few days ago.
If you see the movie full screen, the quantization errors give a shimmering, pointillistic effect to it that I like.
